I’m reading the book “Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving at Work, Home & School” (Second Edition). According to author John Medina, sending e-mails, answering phones, Instant Messaging, and on MySpace—all at the same time increases your error rate to 50% and doubles the time it takes you to complete a task.
Medina states: “The brain is a sequential processor and large fractions of a second are consumed every time the brain switches tasks. This is why cell-phone talkers are a half-second slower to hit the brakes and get in more wrecks.”
Now, imagine what’s happening if you are on the phone or texting while driving to a stressful, frustrating job that you can’t stand. Since I worked in State government for seventeen years, a work environment that was never right for me, it’s probably a good thing legal blindness prevents me from driving. Otherwise, my anticipation of another grueling work day may have led to many fender-benders or a devastating accident. At the very least, the cost of my car insurance would soar.
